Cancer Survivors Symposium Series

» VCU Massey Cancer Center

Thousands of Americans diagnosed with cancer are alive today, but these survivors face uncertainty about various areas of their lives after cancer.

In 2006, a partnership was developed between VCU’s Massey Cancer Center and the local Susan G. Komen for the Cure Foundation to support a series of four to five interactive Brochures about the Cancer Survivors Symposium Series.and educational symposiums per year for the Richmond community. These sessions address issues commonly faced by cancer survivors across clinical, emotional and everyday practical domains and feature national speakers, together with local experts, discussing cutting-edge survivor topics. Some sessions host local survivors who share their personal cancer journeys and what they have learned, along with expert panelists who address participant questions.

In September 2008, the third year of the Cancer Survivor Symposium Series launched with a very moving program — “Points of Light Along the Cancer Journey: Survivors tell their stories.”

The symposium sessions are designed for cancer survivors, survivor family members, health professionals and anyone in our community who is touched by or interested in cancer. Programs are presented at the Science Museum of Virginia, which is located on the bus line so that all interested individuals can easily attend. Thanks to funding from Komen, these informative programs are free to the Richmond community.
