Carver-VCU Partnership

» Division of Community Engagement

The Carver-VCU Partnership strives to create a shared urban community with a commitment to improving the community’s quality of life — including health, community development, youth development, safety and community school — while maintaining a commitment to extending the experience of the community into the classroom and the university.

This goal has been reached through the following activities within the Carver community:

  • Carver Community Day – This block party provides health, housing, safety and nutrition information while supporting more than 400 neighborhood participants.
  • Carver neighborhood residents working in a garden.
  • Carver-VCU Partnership After-School Program – The after-school program services more than 30 elementary and middle school youth through mentoring, tutoring and homework assistance.
  • Community Cleanup – Offering extended home repair services and assistance to Carver-area residents, this partnership also assists in the removal of garbage and graffiti and park beautification with the assistance of AmeriCorps service staff.
  • Private in-home adult tutoring – Tutors assist community members striving to complete the requirements for a GED.

These programs and events are ongoing through the partnership and represent only a fraction of the assistance extended to the Carver community.
