VCU Clark-Hill Institute for Positive Youth Development
» College of Humanities and Sciences
The VCU Clark-Hill Institute for Positive Youth Development is committed to improving the lives of youth and families through research and outreach in Richmond and the surrounding community. The institute is one of 10 Academic Centers of Excellence in Youth Violence Prevention funded by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
The institute grew out of a collaboration initiated in 1992 between institute faculty and representatives
from the Richmond public schools and other city agencies concerned about youth violence. This collaboration led to the development and implementation of school-based and community-based programs for youth and their families such as Responding in Peaceful and Positive Ways, which has been identified as a model program by several federal agencies.
The institute’s activities are coordinated with an advisory council of representatives from the community. Its activities include coordinating a community action plan to address youth violence, developing positive youth development programs that include youth with disabilities, identifying factors that place youth at risk for adjustment problems and producing quarterly fact sheets identifying trends on key indicators of youth violence to inform community groups and policy makers. The institute also provides training opportunities for undergraduate and graduate students and faculty interested in community-based research.
