VCU Libraries Community Programs

» VCU Libraries

Since 2002, the VCU Libraries’ Black History Month and Brown-Lyons Lecture programs have grown to become touchstone annual events for VCU and the Central Virginia community. Both draw increasingly large and notably diverse audiences comprised of community members, Lecture series posters and materials.faculty and students from many different backgrounds.

In 2008, the Brown-Lyons Lecture once again set an attendance record of more than 450 participants. The Black History Month program — “Richmond Women in the Civil Rights Movement” — drew a crowd of more than 200 to an inspirational evening with pivotal but often unrecognized pioneers of the civil rights movement in Virginia.

VCU Libraries’ forums allow dialog and cultural exchange and are recognized arenas where community members, students and faculty interact with one another on issues fundamental to appreciating diversity in our community. As a result, the lecture series has become one of VCU’s strongest and most successful community outreach programs.
