Dental Preceptorship Program
The School of Dentistry preceptorship program works with interested partners of the school to develop collaborative preceptorship sites that allow senior dental and dental hygiene students to experience dentistry in community-based practice environments.
The preceptorship initiative addresses the missions of the university and school by providing an educational program that prepares competent graduates to provide quality oral health care services to the public and service to the community.
Public preceptorship site selection is based on the educational value of the experience, including working with special populations, such as the socially and culturally disadvantaged, and opportunities to practice in alternative and nontraditional settings. Sites include, but are not limited to, Boydton Dental Center in Boydton, Va.; Community Dental Clinic in Martinsville, Va.; Federal Correctional Complex in Petersburg, Va.; Free Clinic of Central Virginia in Lynchburg, Va.; Northern Neck Free Health Clinic in Kilmarnock, Va.; and CrossOver Health Center and Daily Planet in Richmond, Va.
Students have the opportunity to develop professional and community relationships that serve as a foundation for professional learning experiences and leadership development. Preceptors have an enormous influence in shaping the professional attitudes, clinical skills and self-confidence of dental and dental hygiene students.
