Guatemalan Fashion Project

» School of the Arts

Women working with fabric.

For the past three years, Linda Lee, assistant professor of fashion design, has developed partnerships between the School of the Arts and Mayan women cooperatives in Guatemala. VCU design and merchandising students participate in service learning to teach the Mayan women skills that will provide them with fair wages. Students design and create samples that can be duplicated and sold in the U.S., providing a marginalized population with work while sustaining their cultural heritage.
