VCU Head Start
The VCU School of Social Work Head Start Program provides comprehensive early childhood education and development services,
and family support to 210 at-risk 3- and 4-year-old children and their families in the city of Richmond. Of the children served, 90 percent must be income eligible, meaning that their family income is at or below 100 percent of the federal poverty income guidelines, and 10 percent of the children served must have disabilities.
The program utilizes a community-based partnership model that includes university partnerships, community partnerships and seven community-based child care partners located in the city of Richmond or close to the neighborhoods where the children reside.
The Head Start program provides comprehensive services — family and community partnership, health and nutrition, mental health and disabilities, and education. Parents are given opportunities to participate in shared program governance, serve on various committees within the Head Start program and volunteer with the program.
