From Jump Rope to Stethoscope

» VCU Medical Center

The VCU Medical Center’s community contributions are tremendous and they reflect the community in which it is privileged to serve. Initially developed as a project through the Grace E. Harris Leadership Institute, the innovative From Jump Rope to Stethoscope program was created to expose students, particularly those in underserved communities, to careers in health care.

The program is designed and managed by two registered nurses who teach a community middle school health care course and have extensive experience working with children of all ages. : Program medical staff.Specific components of the program include a weeklong nursing camp, a weekend health careers introduction for senior high school students and a paid summer internship program at the VCU Medical Center for qualified and deserving students. Both the weeklong and weekend opportunities are partially funded by a generous grant from the Virginia Health and Hospitals Administration.

Today, the Office of Workforce Development and Strategy continues to expand the impact of the JR2S program throughout the metro-Richmond area. More than 2,000 youths have participated in JR2S activities to date.
