Read Across America Day

» Department of Intercollegiate Athletics

Female VCU students reading to elementary school children.Sponsored by the National Education Association, Read Across America Day is held on March 2, which coincides with Dr. Seuss’ birthday. The annual program began in 1998 and has now become the largest celebration of literacy in the U.S. The program provides an excellent opportunity for educators, parents and the community to come together and make a difference in the lives of children.

VCU student-athletes and administrators have been participating in Read Across America Day since 2003. In previous years, varsity sports teams have taken turns traveling to elementary schools within and around the Richmond area.

In the future, new Life Skills Coordinator Alisha Childress plans to expand the Read Across America Program by encouraging more student-athlete participation as well as reaching out to more elementary schools in the area.
