Virginia’s Caring University Walk-A-Thon
Each spring, the VCU Staff Senate sponsors an annual walk-a-thon to raises funds for the Virginia’s Caring University Scholarship, an undergraduate award for
juniors and seniors in financial need with a grade point average of 2.7 or higher who can demonstrate past or current community service. Since the program began in 2005, the scholarship has helped 35 undergraduate students continue their education and graduate from VCU. In the fall, the VCU Staff Senate hosts an awards ceremony to present the winners with their scholarships. Winners, their families and VCU faculty and staff are invited to join in congratulating these deserving students.
In 2008, the fourth year of the event, the VCU Staff Senate celebrated its largest walk-a-thon to date. The event involved more than 200 participants raising $14,334 in contributions from departments across both campuses and at all levels, including staff, faculty, students and members of the community. Some of this year’s community sponsors included Target, Sam’s Club, Ab[Soul]ute Massage, the Barksdale Theater, the Richmond Braves, the Cheesecake Factory, Olive Garden, Doubletree Hotel, the Crown Plaza Hotel and the Jefferson Hotel. Previously, the VCU Staff Senate raised more than $24,000 in scholarship funds during the walk-a-thon’s first three years.
